a Sports Coupe Toyota Celica GTS 2001

I want to write a small review on my new celica gts 2001.There are few things that I am impressed with the car but there are a few that annoys a little bit.

I read so many reviews on the web the car really handles well on the curves but I couldn't get the feeling when I make the turns in the car.This is maybe because I had driven stable cars like accord,civic,dodge neon,nissan sentra.

As many people mentioned in their reviews, car needs a little more horse power for it to fly.A V6 engine would have been a good idea too.

Gas Mileage:
I always keep the rpm low when I drive the car, I get 30-32mpg with a mix of city and freeway.When compared with other cars in its class this is a nice car with a decent mileage.Ofcourse it takes premium grade gas.

I waited little longer to find a car that is fully loaded,interior leather is very nice but the cheap plastic thrown in the dash makes it look cheaper.

I used to park really well with my other cars, celica parking is always a problem as the visibility is poor in the back and Ofcourse thats a problem with the front.Road view is very nice as you sit very close to the ground.

I am really impressed with the looks of the car, escpecially the rear maybe because of the dual catback exchaust.I will upload some pictures soon.

Sound isn't that great with the stock speakers.Hopefully I will install some better speakers in the car to really experinece the sound I want to hear.

Long iron antenna on the back is really annoying, for a car like that the stock antenna really looks stupid(maybe for me).I replaced mine with a europian one.

This is one of the reasons why I bought this car.A 6 speed transmission is really fun to drive especially at the traffic signals.

Tiny peice of SQL - To find if a sql server guid is a hex

I know guid is a hex, but for very little fun I wrote the following sql to find it out.I got some of the code from Books On Line.Just want to throw it out there to see if something in it helps.

Declare @Iteration int;
Declare @isHex bit;
Set @Iteration = 1;

WHILE (@Iteration < 100000)
DECLARE @position int;
DECLARE @string char(8);
SET @position = 1;
SET @string = REPLACE(Cast( newid() as varchar(36)),'-','A')
WHILE @position <= DATALENGTH(@string)
Set @isHex =
Case when ASCII(SUBSTRING(@string, @position, 1))> 70 then 0
else 1
SET @position = @position + 1;
Set @Iteration = @Iteration + 1;

If @isHex = 0
Print 'Guid is not a hex';
Print 'Guid is a hex';

Internet wireless gateway with Fedora Linux ,Chillispot,FreeRadius and Apache

One of the projects I want to do is to create a wireless hot Spot and control the usage of it(bandwidth,sites users visit, place ad's(for not-for-Profit orgs)). With my limited knowledge of networking I couldn't do it in windows,so I chose Linux as my platform.

After spending more than 100 hours of my time,I finally made my wireless router to work.You should have seen the happiness in my face after the first client machine saw the ad and successfully logged into the wireless network,but there was a little disappointment because I didn't write the code for freeradius ,Apache, chillispot or Fedora Linux. But that's OK for now!

Ubuntu 6 blew my monitor,monitor got stretched horizontally I thought there was something wrong with the Linux video driver,but see the same after formatting and installing windows on the machine.Fortunately I had an extra monitor with which I continued my work.Ububtu didn't detect my second network interface card,so had to move with another flavor of Linux(Mandriva 2007 ).

Mandriva 2007 didn't recognize my NIC and load GUI after installation.Again moved to anther linux flavor (Fedora6).

Fedora6,installation didn't go well( detected my Dlink dfe 530tx NIC), during my package selection I was shown that 3 discs are needed to complete the installation.But installation never prompted me for other discs. After restarting the system, Linux couldn't load and this is what I saw on the screen.

I thought there was some incompatability between my hardware and linux version and moved on with another version of Fedora(Fedora5 as Fedora6 detected my NIC dlink dfe 530tx+ rev d2).Installation went really well, then I installed chillispot,apache and freeradius as per the document provided by chillispot.

Configaration was a breeze, thanks to Chillispot team for providing a complete installation document.

Over clocking of AMD 64 2800 CPU

As I mentioned before I had this opportunity to assemble a new system for basic word processing and emails,I went with AMD 64 2800 CPU with MB BIOSTAR K8M800-M7A K8M800 754 motherboard.

Biostar motherboard came with a nice overclocking utility, that did the overclocking of the cpu.

Following are the details of the overclocked CPU.

------------ Normal ----------OverClocking
CPU Freq-- 1.6Ghz ---------- 1865Mhz
Clock Freq-- 200Mhz -------- 221Mhz
Ram Freq-- 188Mhz --------- 203Mhz

after overclocking, the system was very stable.

Hardware Used:

Mother Board
MB BIOSTAR K8M800-M7A K8M800 754

CPU AMDSEM64 2800+ 1.6G 754 256K %

1 GB Module for Dell OptiPlex GX270 Small Form Factor System PC 2700 184 pin DDR.

Hope this information will help if you want to buy any of the above products.

Atx Power Supply for a Micro Atx MotherBoard

After long time , I had the oppurtunity to assemble a basic system for emails and word processing.I have never ordered a microAtx motherboard for a Atx Power Supply, but by mistake I did it this time.

I was thinking that there is only a phsical difference(dimensions) between a microAtx and Atx power supply, I didn't realize my assumption was wrong until I connected all my compenents and nothing worked.

There were no beeps nor the processor fan is working(no display) when I turned the computer on, but the power light turned on.

I ordered a new microAtx PS and everything worked fine except my microAtx PS didn't fit into the Atx Case.I had to search for the burried toolkit to make the PS fit into the case.

what a mess , for ordering one wrong component.

which search engine is the best; google or msn or yahoo . . .

I started my blog on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, Google crawler was able to look at the blog and grab the content of it by the 22nd of March ,2007,but other search engines couldn't do it.

There are many other factors involved in judging a search engine .The first one is definitely the content that comes after the search. Other search engines seem far behind(at least for me) Google in maintaining their search databases.

The other reason why Google picked my blog is may be because it owns blog spot.

Anyways, I prefer Google over other search engines.

ubuntu . . . you have to try

Linux operating systems usability has been changed a lot since I started using them in late nineties. It was a pain to even install Linux on a machine, forget using them for daily purposes. Thanks to many flavors of Linux for creating a easy partition tool for installing Linux.

After hearing the entire buzz about Ubuntu Linux, I want to try it and feel the operating system (Linux) for human beings.

Some of the following features I like the best in ubuntu is its vnc support, multi language support, ability to Remote Desktop to a windows machine, IPV6 support,open office2.0 and Keyboard shortcuts.

I wish I could write a lot about the features of ubuntu. As "A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words" I am going with pictures instead of words.

RoboCopy to manage files SQL server

Sometimes you would have to manage files using t-sql jobs/packages in sql server, then xp_cmdshell with robocopy can serve the purpose.

I like xp_cmdshell a lot as it can be used to execute various dos Command Line Commands.
Grant Permissions carefully to the users who can run xp_cmdshell as it has the power to get the system details,network details and much more.

Robocopy, or "Robust File Copy" is a tool from Microsoft and is available for licensed windows users in the resource kit(also included in windows vista by default).

One very nice cool feature of this tool is its ability to copy the permissions on the folder(/copyall).

For more info on the parameters of robocopy

Lets jump into the sql ..

DECLARE @SrcFolder varchar(300)
DECLARE @DesFolder varchar(300)
DECLARE @Cmd varchar(1000)

SELECT @SrcFolder = 'C:\tst'
SELECT @DesFolder = 'C:\tst1'
SELECT @Cmd = 'robocopy ' + @SrcFolder +' ' +'"'+ @DesFolder +'"'+ ' ' + '/copyall /b /xx /mir /nc /ns /ndl /nfl /ts /fp'

EXEC master.dbo.xp_cmdshell @Cmd

To run the above xp_cmdshell command , domain account with proper( read /write )permissions on the source and destination folders is required.

With my little photographic skills, I couldn't capture all the beauty of Chicago. But tried to get some of it though . . !

Generic Stored Procedure for Updating different Datatype Columns

Generic Stored Procedure to Update Columns of different datatypes.

userPreferences Table

UserName(varchar) ShowBorder (bit) RecentLinks(int) UserLocation
A 1 4 US
B 0 5 IN

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[UpdateUserPreferences]
@UserPreferenceName Varchar(50),
@UserPreferenceType Varchar(50),
@UserPreferenceValue Varchar(50)
Declare @UpdateSql Varchar(500)

SET @UpdateSql = 'update [tblUserPreferences] Set '+ @UserPreferenceName + ' = Cast('

If (@UserPreferenceType = 'Char' or @UserPreferenceType = 'Varchar')
SET @UpdateSql = @UpdateSql+ '''' + @UserPreferenceValue + '''' + ' As ' + @UserPreferenceType + '(50)) where userName = SYSTEM_USER'
SET @UpdateSql = @UpdateSql + @UserPreferenceValue + ' As ' + @UserPreferenceType + ') where userName = SYSTEM_USER'
EXEC (@UpdateSql)

EXEC UpdateUserPreferences ‘ShowBorder’,’bit’,’0’

EXEC UpdateUserPreferences ‘UserLocation’,’Varchar’,’AUS’

This is not the optimal solution but works on small tables.Above SP also demonstrate the simple use of dynamic sql statements.
